Job Description:
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is looking for an individual to teach JNL 530.1 Political Reporting on Tuesdays 5:00pm - 7:45pm during the Fall 2025 Semester. (3 credits)
Course Description: This is an advanced reporting course designed to equip journalism students with the skills necessary to cover government, political campaigns, elections and public policy. The professor will help students learn how to cover campaigns and elections, start to finish, including how to utilize campaign finance reports, understand the impact of redistricting, and gaining insight into how government works locally and in New York state. The students learn through readings, class discussions, and hands-on reporting projects that ideally yield publishable work for partnering news organizations.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required.
Masters degree preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those with prior political reporting experience.
Previous experience teaching a college-level course is desired but not required.
Responsibilities:
It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:
Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
Ability to hold office hours on campus.
Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
Tools/Equipment:
Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
