Under immediate supervision of the Manager for Grounds, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus.

Under immediate supervision of the Manager for Grounds, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus.

Responsibilities:

• Under guidance of the lead groundsworker, performs a broad range of groundskeeping duties, including but not limited to, planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers. Mows and edges lawns. Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and cleans trash from assigned areas including parking lots. Prepares and treats soils for planting.
• Operate and maintain equipment and tools for grounds and pest control operations; operate all equipment properly, following proper procedures including safety precautions; service equipment accordingly.
• Performs pruning, thinning and constructing supports for trees and shrubs. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with tree trimming, or nursery functions. Proper techniques are used and proficiency is demonstrated for this task. Planting and maintaining turf, shrubs, and trees.
• May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with sprinkler repair and performs minor sprinkler repair.
• General cleanup. Assure that work stations are kept clean and neat, all tools and equipment are properly stored and the general area is kept free of trash and litter.
• State employees may be required to serve as a disaster service worker and participate in disaster recovery efforts.
• Other classification-related duties as assigned. May drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Abilities:
Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated willingness and initiative in carrying out assigned projects and duties. Working knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and the ability to perform daily tasks effectively. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and complete assigned work accurately and efficiently.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Initial salary step placement will be in the range of Step 1 - $3,461 to Step 5- $3,747 per month for qualified candidates.

CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $3,461 - $4,752 per month (Step 1 - Step 17)

Work status: Full-time / Non-Exempt / Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (5:00 am - 3:30 pm), some evenings/weekends

Working Schedule: Monday through Friday 6:00am- 2:30pm

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
